Central 5 v 0 Westexe
It couldn’t be any tighter at the top of Juventus
League 2, with Honiton and Central tied on points and goal difference after
Central’s fine 5-0 victory. Both sides await Okehampton’s fate- they are 5
points adrift with 2 games in hand. If they should fail to win either of these
games, then Central and Honiton will play off for the title.
Central pressed forward from the first whistle, Sam Perry finishing Pip Arnold’s
cross and then Luke Somerwill driving home a penalty for a 2-0 lead after 15
minutes. In the second half there were further goals for Tom Short, James
Mitchell and another penalty, this time taken by Perry.
With Central pushing forward for goals, whenever the defence risked being
exposed, Tom Aldridge provided superb cover.
Saturday 4th April 2009 Cup Semi-Final
Central 1 v 7 Pinhoe
It was a day to forget for
Central as they exited the last 4 of the cup following a blistering first 30
minutes from Pinhoe. Harry Rogers opened the scoring on 5 minutes with a 20 yard
scorcher, and from then on, Central were chasing shadows as Pinhoe played
superbly, to go 6-0 up on 30 minutes, including Rogers’ hatrick. Some tinkering
by Central’s manager enabled them to play for pride, with Sam Chamberlain coming
on and putting in a superb performance in left midfield, and Luke Somerwill
headed a goal to give Central a little dignity. But it was Dylan Dare who
finished the game in style for Pinhoe with another spectacular long range goal.
Central can take pride in reaching this far in the competition and will hope to
recover to win the 2nd division title.
Saturday 28th Mar 2009
Countess Wear 0 v 3 Central
Central kept up their bid for the league 2 title
with a well won victory over Dynamoes, continuing their 100% record since
November.
Sam Perry scored on 15 minutes and 5 minutes later, pressure from Will Roberts
forced a defensive error, allowing Perry to play in Tom Short who finished well.
2-0 down in the second half, Dynamoes continued to work hard and a fine save
from Ben King preserved the 2 goal lead. However, Central added a 3rd when an
in-swinging corner caused confusion and the ball rebounded off numerous
defenders and into the net for 3-0.
There were outstanding performances from Rhys Beauchamp, protecting the defence
well, and Rob Somerwill at left back who stifled Dynamoes' main attacking
threat.

Central 1-0 West Exe CUP QUARTER FINAL
A performance showing great heart and commitment
saw Central through to the semi final stage with a narrow victory over higher
ranked West Hill.
With a difficult pitch and a blustery wind for both sides to contend with, it
was West Hill who made the early running, and a crucial block by Charlie
Greenslade rescued Central. However, it was Central who scored, with their first
serious attack of the game. Will Roberts was set free on the right, and slipped
the ball behind his marker for Pip Arnold to chase down and calmly sidefoot home
for 1-0.
In the second half, West Hill fought hard for an equaliser, but Olly Johnson and
Miles Woolnough were in top form in defence, and denied clear chances. When they
did have a chance, it needed Rob Somerwill to head a goalbound shot off the
line.
It was Central who finished the stronger, with Arnold defending from the front
and the lower division team were unlucky not to extend their lead.
Saturday 07th Mar 2009
Central 8-1 Heavitree
Central did no harm to their chances of winning
Juventus League 2 following this demolition job on Heavitree. The first 20
minutes were scoreless, but Central’s pressure mounted and a clearance under
pressure from the keeper could only find Pip Arnold who found the unguarded net
from 30 yards out.
Heavitree were causing their own downfall, and a long ball from defence was
headed back from a defender, Will Roberts latching onto the loose ball and
finishing confidently. Central continued to threaten, and Luke Somerwill rounded
the keeper and a defender before scoring for a 3-0 lead. Somerwill then flicked
on a header to provide Tom Short with a chance for goal number 4.
Heavitree had not given up though, and Josh Jones shielded the ball well in the
box before turning and angling his shot into the corner, but Central scored a
5th before the break, Short crossing only for a defender to ‘og’ under pressure
from Somerwill.
In the second half, there were 2 goals for Sam Perry when he benefitted from
good approach work from Short and the 2nd a break from a Heavitree corner-
running from inside his own half to make it 7-1. Somerwill scored his 2nd and
Cental’s 8th with 10 minutes remaining.
Good performances all round from Central, especially the dominant James Mitchell
in midfield who was Man of the Match

Central 5 - 2 Westexe
Central took control early on in this cup tie, missing 2 good chances before Pip
Arnold volleyed home a punched clearance on 10 minutes. However, Westexe pinned
Central into their half for long periods, playing high balls at the central
defence. This paid off when a cross from the left was scrambled home by James
Copp. Minutes later, they produced an almost identical goal to lead 2-1. This
shook Central into action and within 5 minutes, they had regained the lead. Tom
Short equalised with a neat cushioned half volley which beat the keeper at the
near post and then Luke Somerwill took the ball around a defender and shot from
the edge of the area for a 3-2 lead.
Central shuffled their team at half time, to counter the high balls from Westexe
and Tom Aldridge responded with a great performance at centre back alongside the
ever-reliable Olly Johnson. Rhys Beauchamp changed role to striker, with
Somerwill shoring up midfield and within a minute Beauchamp had scored when he
was left unmarked, slotting home a great cross from Jamie Pryse. Central soaked
up Westexe pressure for the remainder of the half, catching them on the break
late on, when Pip Arnold rounded the keeper after a defensive mix up.
Great credit to Charlie Greenslade who stepped in
as Central’s keeper at the last minute.
Goals: Pip Arnold 2, Tom Short, Luke Somerwill, Rhys Beauchamp

Central 6 Exmouth Amateurs 1
Central remain top of the league following an improved second half against
Amateurs. Central took the lead on 20 minutes, when Jonny Stamen’s cross was
flicked on by Luke Somerwill for Tom Short to score. Amateurs caught Central
sleeping when a free kick led to them opening up the defence for the equaliser.
The remainder of the half saw Amateurs in control.
The second half saw a great improvement from Central as they used the width
better, but not before Ben King made a crucial tip over save to keep the score
1-1. Soon after, Tom Short harassed the defence and won the ball to cross for
Sam Perry to score. Minutes later, Perry’s dangerous cross resulted in an own
goal, Central’s 3rd. Will Roberts, Perry again and Short again completed the
scoring
Goals: (Tom Short 2, Sam Perry 2, og, Will Roberts)

Honiton 0 - 2 Central
Central held on to first place in Juventus League
2 with a disciplined performance at 2nd place Honiton. Central had the better of
early exchanges, with both Luke Somerwill and Tom Short coming close to opening
the scoring. However, Honiton found their feet and came back strongly but
couldn’t get passed the well marshalled centre back pairing of Olly Johnson and
Charlie Greenslade. It was Central who took a 1-0 lead into half time, following
a corner, Pip Arnold beating the defence to a loose ball for his 2nd league goal
of the season.
In the second half, Central created a number of chances, but the combination of
good goalkeeping and inaccuracy kept the scoreline tight. Honiton were afforded
a few chances from long range, but the crucial goal came from Will Roberts as he
ran on to Sam Perry’s through ball and kept his head to slot the ball into the
net for 2-0. Central played out the last 15 minutes well.
Saturday 08th November 2008
Westexe 2 - 7 Central
It took just 2 minutes for Central to take the
lead, James Mitchell losing his marker to head in Sam Perry’s deep corner.
Minutes later it was 2-0 as Tom Short’s shot hit the post and Luke Somerwill was
there to finish. The third was from Somerwill pressurising the defence and
cutting back the perfect cross for Will Roberts to score.
At that stage, it looked as if Central would cruise to victory, but Westexe
refused to cave in, and pulled a goal back on the break and another from a
penalty. Just before half time, Central extended their lead to 4-2 when Luke
Somerwill smashed home a loose ball following a corner.
Central played some excellent football in the second half. Somerwill completed
his hatrick with a neat lob from the edge of the penalty area and Sam Perry
scored 2 late goals, one from a burst down the left and one from a free kick to
give Central a 7-2 victory. James Mitchell controlled the midfield throughout
the game

Central 0 Honiton 2
A well contested match between 2 evenly matched
teams ended with 2 late Honiton goals killing off Central.
Chances were at a premium throughout the game, but it needed a spectacular
diving save from Ben King to keep Central in it. Once again, Central’s defence
were well marshalled and coped easily with the high balls aimed at them, forcing
Honiton to change their game plan- Tom Aldridge being the pick of the defenders.
In the second half, the game became more stretched and as the half progressed,
it was clear that someone would score soon- Luke Somerwill coming close for
Central with an 18 yard drive. Honiton broke the deadlock when a striker broke
free of his marker and angled his header across the keeper to score. As Central
pushed for an equaliser though, they were caught on the break as Honiton made it
2-0.
Also great credit to referee, Ray Leworthy.
Saturday 13th September 2008
Sidmouth Town 1 Central 2
Central opened their league season with 3 points
gained at Sidmouth, but made hard work of the task.
Any spectators of the first 10 minutes would not have predicted any other result
but a comfortable Central victory, as they launched wave after wave of attacks
on the Sidmouth goal. The goal arrived in the 10th minute, when Sam Perry’s free
kick was perfectly placed over the defence for Tom Short to run on to and head
in. There were further chances for Central, but Sidmouth started to get a
foothold in the game, but were reliant on long ball as full backs Rhys Beauchamp
and Rob Somerwill would not allow Sidmouth to use any width
Sidmouth equalised in the second half following a corner, which shook Central
back into action. Luke Somerwill’s opportunity from a one on one with the keeper
was superbly saved, but Somerwill chased the loose ball, fed Pip Arnold, who was
delighted to see his cross beat the keeper for a 2-1 lead.
Central were well disciplined in the closing stages, Tom Aldridge putting in an
excellent debut performance at centre back and developing a good understanding
with defensive partner, Olly Johnson.
Under 15s pre-season friendly
Countess Wear Dynamoes 1 Central 6
Both sides are competing in the second tier of the under 15 Juventus League this
season and took the opportunity for an early meeting.
Central needed to recruit 2 players from a younger age group, and it was one of
these, Sam Gard, who set up the first goal. His accurate cross was finished with
a neat angled header by Luke Somerwill. Central were dragged into Countess
Wear’s long ball style, but it benefitted them when a ball out of defence found
Pip Arnold, who outpaced his marker and finished well for 2-0. New signing Tom
Aldridge proved his worth at centre back, putting in 2 crucial challenges to
prevent goal scoring opportunities.
In the second half, Central were confident enough to play a better passing game,
a series of passes leading to Tom Short shooting at goal, the keeper saving well
but only for the ball to rebound to Short who headed the 3rd goal. Dynamoes
pulled a goal back for 3-1, but Central were not phased and soon regained a 3
goal margin when Ryan Gray scored with a looping shot from 18 yards. Short made
it 5-1 when he chased a through ball and sidefooted past the keeper. Luke
Somerwill’s 2nd headed goal made it 6-1. Moments later Rob Somerwill rattled the
crossbar with a rasping drive from outside the box, but the boys could be
delighted with a strong team performance.
What was pleasing about the performance was the willingness of the full backs to
both attack and defend and the ability of other players to fill in to those
positions when necessary.
