Central 7 Westhill Wasps 2

Central U 14s started off with a good win against a rejuvenated Westhill. Westhill over the summer had picked up several new players and showed that they were not a side to be taken lightly as they were first to score via a long ball to their centre forward who showed power and strength to shrug off Luke Howlett and Ross Clotworthy to score the opener.

Central then piled on the pressure with the midfield partnership of Patrick Clark and Ayed Omari beginning to show dominance laying the ball in the path of Joe for a well taken equaliser. The two Central strikers, Jack Leech and Jarod Bradley playing together for the first time then showed their strength and power by wrestling the ball away from the shell shocked Westhill defence to pile in another 4 goals in quick succession.

Westhill failed to clear their lines on a number of occasions and were punished again by Central as Patrick Clark seized on a loose ball to finish well to make the score 6 – 1 at half time.

Our new goalkeeper Dan Phillips came off at half time through injury being replaced by Aaron Hunt and Aiden Murphy and Sam Philpott came in midfield and defence repacing the two Joe’s. All credit to Westhill as they came out in the second half with a couple of substitutes and played the more attacking football and well deserved their second goal via a cross/come shot. Ayed Omari dropped deeper to help the defence and on a number of occasions took the ball from defence to attack showing he hadn’t lost his lightening pace even though he had grown several inches over the summer!

Aaron Hunt made a number of excellent saves to keep Westhill at bay and near to the end of the match Patrick Clark took the ball from midfield to finish in the top corner for a final result of 7 – 2.

Man of the Match Jarod Bradley scored a hat trick and made a real nuisance of himself (no change there!)

Alphington 4 Central 1

The team arrived early to the ground and very soon some of our players suggested we were on the wrong pitch as they had spotted quite a number of familiar faces from Westexe warming up in Alphington colours! It transpired that a large number of children had left Westexe in the summer and joined various other teams in our league.

So undaunted by this we commenced playing and this time we didn’t let in an early goal and the first ten to fifteen minutes was pretty even with both sides having chances in front of goal. Alphington however soon opened up the scoring by the ball popping out of a crowded midfield behind our defensive line and their striker took the ball well passed the stranded Dan to open the scoring. We then squandered a number of chances in front of goal but eventually Jack Leech used his strength to bully his way onto the ball for a well deserved equaliser. Although Alphington retook the lead with a well worked goal

At half time it was 2 – 1 and anyones game. Unfortunately, though Alphington came out much stronger in the second half an unchallenged header from a corner made the score 3 – 1. We again had a number of chances but couldn’t put the ball away, Aaron Hunt hitting the side netting and A.N.Other putting one just over the crossbar, however the next goal was a well taken goal from Alphington resulting from some excellent passing from the Alphington team to make the final score 4 – 1 to Alphington.

We played better football in this game than we did against Westhill but failed to take our chances in front of goal. The game was excellently refereed and was played with good spirit and sportsmanship.

Man of the match Ayed Omari for his endless running’

Stoke Hill 6 Central 1

Central started the game without Ayed Omari and with Robert Kirk stepping in. Stoke Hill Celtic are a young team but very skillful and well organised. From their first corner they scored from a well worked near post header but Central settled with Jack Leech going close a couple of times. Jarod Bradley scored his fourth goal of the season backing up well as the Stoke Hill goalie did well to parry a fierce Patrick Clark free kick. Unfortunately Stoke Hill retook the lead with a well worked goal on the break just before half time.

The second half didn't go well - Stoke Hill spent most of it camped in the Central half flashing a few warning shots close before firing in four unanswered goals. Dan Phillips in goal even produced a couple of full length dives to keep the score down. Central did finish the game forcing a couple of corners but did not produce anything to trouble the Stoke Hill goal. The final score was 6-1 and generally it was a disappointing performance as quite a few of the team wilted under the physical presence of the opposition and this will be a worry to the coaching team.

Man of the match - Luke Howlett for a much improved second half performance.

Civil Service 2 Central 4

Central gave a debut to Jack Martin in goal on a showery day down on a Flowerpots pitch at Exwick. Civil Service are a tall team with mostly new players at this level. Central started brightly and putting the home team under a period of sustained pressure but Civil Service held out for about 20 minutes until Jarod Bradley managed to force a shot home. About five minutes later Civil Service had their first real attack - Central failed to clear a corner properly and Civil Service popped in a well hit equaliser - apparently their first goal and led to exuberant celebrations. Civil Service then had a period of pressure before Central returned to the attack and forced a defender into an unfortunate sliced own goal to go in at half-time 2-1 up.

With the showers fortunately holding off Central started the second half once again putting the pressure on and soon got a third goal came through Jack Leech. The game was not safe though as Civil Service scored their second as most of Central's defence were caught upfield and Civil Service found a fine finish in the top corner. In the last five minutes one of Central's passing moves finally paid off by leaving Patrick Clark clear through in goal for a neat finish in the corner. All in all an entertaining game, played in a good spirit and, of course, the right result.

Man of the Match - Patrick Clark for an impressive midfield performance with an honourable mention to Jack Martin who did well in goal.

Central 4 Sidmouth JV 0

With the sun shining and the pitch a little softer Central turned in their best performance of the season so far. Jack Martin played his first game in defence alongside Sam Philpott. After 5 minutes an Ali Omari shot was palmed on to the crossbar by the goalie and Ed Hammond forced the ball in as Sidmouth failed to clear their lines. The first half continued with a series of flowing attacks usually ending up with an Ali Omari shot that was of more danger to the seagulls than the goal. By half-time Central were a fragile 1-0 up.

Jarod Bradley and Joe Harrison had picked up knocks and were replaced by Aaron Hunt and Esben Ronan (making his debut) in the second half. Central continued to put the physically strong Sidmouth team under pressure and the vital second goal came from a brilliant long range chip from Patrick Clark. Jack Leech went close with a shot on the turn that flashed past the post before he set up the third goal with a run along the bye line and a pass for Aaron Hunt to tap the ball in from a metre. Sidmouth then enjoyed their best period of the match, forcing Central back and culminating in a an excellent shot that just evaded the far post. Central were still managing good efforts on goal though and Jack Leech was unlucky to see a shot cleared off the line and an Owen Carter lob hit the bar. Aaron Hunt got the fourth goal from closer in than his first goal after a good combination from Ali Omari and Patrick Clark.

All in all it was an excellent team performance with the newer players gelling nicely and welcome returns to form for wingers Ed Hammond and Owen Carter and Aaron Hunt up front. Man of the Match was Sam Philpott for a dominating performance in defence.

Central 5 Pinhoe Spartans 0

The team arrived early on a surprisingly sunny morning and were very much up for the game, as many of the team have friends that play for Pinhoe. The game started brightly with Pinhoe having the better of the first 10 minutes or so, with a number of early tests for Dan Phillips.

However, against the run of play, Jack Leech managed to muscle his way through the defence and powered the ball into the net. From then on Central piled on alot of pressure and the Pinhoe goallie made a number of fine blocks to keep the score at 1 - 0 at half time.

One of the teams had to come out and score early and that's exactly what Central did with Jarod Bradley managing to squeeze the ball past the goalie after some good passing play between Ed Hammond and Patrick Clark.

Central then went on to press further with Ayed Omari taking the ball past several midfielders, finally being fouled just outside the box and Patrick Clark taking an unstoppable free kick to make it 3 - 0. Central continued to press and with 2 substitutes being made towards the end the team lost their shape, however, with a number of good runs up the right wing by Luke Howlett, along came another goal scored by Jarod Bradley and then another in quick succession for his first hat trick of the season.

Towards the end Pinhoe pressured and were unlucky not to score, as Dan Phillips made some excellent saves to deny Pinhoe and keep him a clean sheet. Central maybe should of had a few more with too many missed chances. Ed Hammond had to come off right at the end as he was accidentally kicked in the face, his replacement Ross Clotworthy thought he had a chance at the end but only to be denied by the referee's whistle, Better luck next time son! Overall a good solid performance by Central.

Countess Wear Dynamoes 8 Central 1

We knew that this was going to be a tough game against the strongest team in the league (in my opinion!) and I wasn’t disappointed. Their first goal was scored in 38 seconds from the kick off and their second followed within a couple of minutes so I began to start praying for a floodlight failure (pity there wasn’t any) or some other divine inspiration but unfortunately nothing materialised!

They were all over us like a rash we had no answers to their pace and strength which showed how woefully inadequate our back line was. Ayed tried to stem the flow from midfield and Jack Martin showed grit and determination until he went off injured but all in all we could do little to hold back the tide.

However, before I go off and book an early appointment with my therapist, I would like to say that Dan Phillips played an absolute blinder in goal and stopped many, many shots to keep their tally down to eight.

Also, Jarod Bradley snuck one in at the other end to keep his goal tally above Jack Leech which I am sure will please him but not Jack!

Man of the Match – Dan Phillips he was a hero!’

Pinhoe Spartans 2 Central 7

On a sunny day but with a chilly wind at Newton St Cyres, Central started off well with good possession but some wasteful finishing keeping the game scoreless until the Robert Kirk finished neatly from close range. Five minutes later Pinhoe broke in numbers and some indecisive defending allowed them to equalise. Another Robert Kirk goal after a cross from the right restored the lead but Pinhoe equalised again straight from the restart. Central had dominated especially down the right with Luke Howlett and Aidan Murphy standing out but goalie Dan Phillips was forced into several brave saves at the Pinhoe strikers feet. In what had been an open half Central got the edge after a fine run along the byeline and finish from Patrick Clark. 2-3 at half time.

Action from the Pinhoe game

It got foggy !!!!

despite the fact there was a wind

With the wind behind them Central continued to press Pinhoe into their own half but the important fourth goal wouldn't come. With about 15 mins to go Sub Ross Clotworthy finished confidently after good work from Ed Hammond and as Pinhoe started to tire Patrick Clark got the fifth. Jarod Bradley finished neatly after combining with Aaron Hunt for the sixth and Jarod's defence splitting pass led to a fine first time finish from the edge of the box by Ross Clotworthy to complete the scoring. Ed Hammond had a fine combative game in midfield as did Esben Ronin in defence.

Joint Men of the match: Patrick Clark and Luke Howlett

Civil Service 1 Central 9 (Cup Match )

After alot of heavy rain in the week I was doubtful if the match would go ahead, the pitch looked more like a paddy field, heavily poached by a herd of wilderbeast, rather than a football pitch! The ref agreed and persuaded the Council man to move us to the next pitch which was a little bit damp in comparison. We were without our first choice strikers of Jack Leach and Jarod Bradley and therefore Robert Kirk and Aaron Hunt partnered up front for the first time and looking at the physical presence of the Civil team, I thought we might be in trouble. How wrong was I, we attacked them from the first whistle, being quicker and more skilful on the ball, carving chance after chance and the goals soon followed in quick succession.

The first coming from a good cross from the right from Aaron Hunt, falling to Owen ‘the vulture’ Carter to scuff the ball home from a few feet. A few minutes later and in Central's next meaningful move saw a neat finish from Robert Kirk and a third goal came from Owen Carter with a clean left foot strike. Central were finishing their chances clinically for a change but Civil failed to clear their lines and were constantly putting themselves under pressure. Later in the half Ed Hammond and Patrick Clark began to dominate in midfield and Patrick scored twice and Ed forced in the sixth goal off the far post, which squeezed over the line, just! The last kick of the half saw Civil score an unstoppable goal directly from a corner. The score 1 - 6 at half time.

Central made some changes at half-time with Joe Van Doorslaer, Jack Jennings and Luke Howlett replacing Jack Martin, Joe Harrison and Owen Carter. Civil's attacks were mostly blunted by Esben Ronan and Sam Philpott forming a strong partnership in defence and Dan Phillips in goal had the luxury of not being seriously tested too much (though he still managed to get pretty muddy). Patrick Clark was left with too much space by the Civil midfield and he was at liberty to choose which pass to make whether to the willing wingers which were now camped in the Civil half or the two strikers who battled and ran their socks off. Central eventually got the scoring under way again with a fine Ross Clotworthy finish from one of Patrick Clark's through balls and then Patrick Clark completed a well earned hat trick with a shot from the edge of the penalty area and Aaron Hunt getting the goal his performance deserved, making the final score 1-9.

This was one of Central's best performances - everyone's passing game was first class (maybe Chris Webster's training session paid off) and the defence was excellent at nullifying the physical threat posed by the opposition. Central can now look forward to a quarter-final in the New Year but with Jack and Jarod back who to put up front? – watch this space folks!.

Man of the Match: Esben Ronan for a faultless game in defence (but this was a particularly hard decision this week as so many players had good games)

Central 3 Alphington 4

Both teams had not had a game for several weeks, so they were keen to put in a good performance. Central started the first half brightly, Robert Kirk and Jack Leech playing together up front for the first time linked well but did not get many chances to shoot as the Alphington defenders were well organised and closed down our players well. The first ten to fifteen minutes was pretty even with Central probably shading it on possession, until an Alphington striker pounced on an unlucky deflection to put Alphington 0 - 1 up.

Central continued to press but lacked that cutting edge and again were punished by failing to clear their lines and Alphington finished well to make it 0 - 2 at half time. The highlight of the first half had to be Dan Phillip’s save after a pulsating Alphington move led to a brilliant shot from the edge of the box - Dan "the cat" somehow managed to reach the ball and deflect  it onto the cross bar and the rebound was cleared - the save wouldn't have looked out of place in any arena.

Sam Philpot felt ill at half time and Joe Harrison 'volunteered' to take his central defence role which meant that Joe Van Doorslaer being press ganged into left back. Ross Clotworthy wanted to go in right back, releasing lightening Luke Howlett forward to right wing and Aaron Hunt replacing Robert Kirk up front. Joe Van Doorslaer looked rusty for the first ten minutes, as he was finding it difficult to pick up the pace of the game, however when he got going he battled hard and played really well in an unfamiliar position. As suspected early in the second half an Alphington player weaved through several half tackles and finished well to make it 0 - 3 to Alphington. I kind of thought, omg, we are going to be stuffed!

However, Jack Leech and Aaron Hunt kept up the pressure and a fine cross from Patrick Clark onto Jack Leech's head for a superb finish 1 - 3. Five minutes later as Central continued to press and won a corner and from the corner the ball came off Aaron's back for a goal 2 - 3. Patrick Clark and Ed Hammond in midfield kept hassling for the ball laying it in the path of Aaron who was fouled in the penalty area. Ed 'the captain' took charge and cooly finished off the penalty 3 -3. Not that I play LMA 2007, FIFA 2007 or even Pro evo 6, who needs it when you watch a game like that!

Unfortunately, Alphington sneeked one in at the end to make it 3 - 4 but we actually played our socks off and credit to all the team. Well done.

Man of the match Patrick Clark another awesome midfield display.

Westhill 1 Central 8

Weather was fine and the ground nice and soft but bumpy and there was quite a slope which we elected to play upwards in the first half. Coach Tim decided to play an adventurous 3-5-2 formation with Ian Tucker debuting as a holding midfielder and Jarod Bradley returning up front after missing a few weeks.

After a fairly even opening 10 mins with both sides struggling with their first touch, Central began to exert some pressure and Ed Hammond opened the scoring from a Jack Leech throw. 10 mins later the lead was doubled as Jack Leech got his first from a Patrick Clark through ball. Then Jarod Bradley scored a simple tap in, after Westhill failed to deal with a Patrick Clark corner and Jack Leech got his second with a strong chest down and volley. Against the run of play West Hill then scored to make it 1- 4 at half time.

Coach Tim shuffled his pack again - Dan Phillips was allowed out of goal to go up front being replaced by Jack (not very willing at all) Martin, Ian Tucker dropped into defence and Owen Carter came on for Jack Jennings - 3-4-4 formation now! Playing down the hill proved quite tricky and frustrating as there was plenty of possession but the ball was hard to keep on the pitch. After about 10 mins Jack Leech completed his hat trick running on to a through ball and it was deja vu 5 mins later as he converted another from a Patrick Clark pass.

Then came Dan Phillips moment of glory, as he got the chance to convert a fortuitous penalty as Ross (it wasn't a pen honest) Clotworthy fell over an outstretched leg - Dan gave the goalie "the eye" and side footed the ball wide of the post! With Central losing their shape as individuals went for goal, the game became very scrappy and untidy, Westhill were becoming frustrated and Central lost their concentration it was not pleasant to watch,

However, there was still time for Ed Hammond to lob the keeper for his second and Jack Leech to get his fifth from a Ross Clotworthy pass to make the final score 1-8.

Ian Tucker was MOM after an impressive debut snuffing out most of West Hill's attacks linking impressively with Jack Martin in a strong centre defensive partnership. Well done Ian and welcome to Central.

Central 3 Brixington Utd 5

They say the sun shines on the righteous but it also shines on Central U14s - this match was played in fairly warm and sunny conditions but the pitch was quite bumpy. For the second week running a referee failed to turn up but this being a cup quarter-final this was even more unfortunate - a Brixington Utd coach reffed the first half and Coach Tim the second. Brixington have some large, physical players and might have proven a challenge for any referee.

The first 15 minutes were very even as the two teams sized each other up. The first real chance fell as an Owen Carter cross bobbled through to Ross Clotworthy on the far post - he took one touch to control it and placed his shot confidently just inside the post. The lead lasted 5 mins and then Brixington's power began to show and they took advantage of comparatively hesitant defending to score 4 goals before half time. At some point in the build up Central had chances to clear three of the goals but failed and were punished.

Second half was a different affair as Brixington soon brought on some substitutes and rested on their lead. Central had a lot of possession and pressure but found the Brixington defence quite robust. Aaron Hunt was unlucky when his shot was well saved by the goalie and Patrick Clark swung in a free kick that just missed the far post. Ross Clotworthy had to replaced by Robert Kirk after he received an elbow to the head from the Brixington goalie. A fine run from Patrick Clark finally led to an individual goal to bring the score to 2-4. Any chance of a revival was thwarted a few minutes later as Brixington produced an unstoppable finish in the top corner. Just before the end Jarod Bradley produced an excellent volley from well outside the box to make the final score 3-5.

This was a physical game of a level Central were not used to but by the end they had begun to match their first division opponents and give them a few scares as a result

Central 4 Colyton Reds 7

A Jack Leech hat-trick wasn't enough to see Central fall to an embarrassing defeat. After a break of 5 weeks due to waterlogged pitches the sun shone gloriously on a nice soft KGV pitch though the grass was maybe a bit long. Central only had the bare minimum number of players for this game.

Though Central began with only 10 players (Patrick Clark was delayed in a traffic jam) you couldn't tell as they pinned Colyton deep in their own half. Patrick turned up after about 15 mins but the readjusting to fit him in led to a lack of concentration and the conceding of a sloppy goal. Central then began a period of domination which saw Jack Leech score on a break, Ed Hammond lob the goalie from the edge of the box and Jack Leech stab the ball just inside the far post. Just before half-time Colyton scored direct from a free-kick on the edge of the box that sailed in the top corner giving Dan Phillips no chance. Central went in 3-2 up at half-time.

Central started the second half well with Jack Leech soon getting his third but from then on, as Central tired, Colyton took hold in midfield and began to ask our defence too many questions. Colyton scored 5 unanswered goals and game away with what looked for a long time an unlikely comfortable win. Central were understandably deflated by the final score but can take heart that for long periods they were in control and with another couple of matches to get the fitness back up and plus some substitutes to freshen things up such a collapse would be unlikely to happen again.

Central 6 Civil Service 0

This match was played on sunny but cool morning on a rock hard KGV pitch that would make flowing football difficult. Thanks should go to Ian Tucker's dad who stood in as referee as there was another no show from the official ref.

Central started with the rare luxury of two substitutes and the match was even with both defences struggling to clear their lines and suffering periods of pressure. Central opened the scoring with a slightly lucky goal - an Ed Hammond through ball bounced over the Civil goalie and into the goal closely followed by Ben Grayson and Jarod Bradley desperately trying to get a touch. After another fairly even period a break down the right led to a teasing cross that evaded everyone apart from central defender Sam Philpott who blasted the ball in from level with the far post. Sam missed the chance to get his second after his header just missed the post from a corner.

Central were happy to go in at half-time 2-0 as Civil had looked quite dangerous in attack. Owen Carter and Luke Howlett came on in the second half but Owen only lasted 5 minutes before a knee injury forced him off. The second half would be broken up by a series of offside decisions against Central but in a rare break that was legal Jarod Bradley's one on one with the goalie resulted in a fine finish off the far post. Joe Harrison then nodded in after a free kick and a fine Patrick Clark run ended with an exquisite chip into the top corner from the edge of the box just before the defenders closed him down. The scoring was completed by an excellent blast inside the near post by a deserving Ben Grayson to make the final score 6-0. Goalie Dan Phillips and the central defensive partnership of Esben Ronan and Sam Philpott should be especially proud to keep a clean sheet as they were tested on a number of occasions but restricted Civil to just a handful of half chances. 6 goals from 6 different scorers showed this was a good team effort.

This was the third time Central had faced Civil this season and this was by far the hardest game and showed that Civil must have put in a lot of hard work in during the season and the improvements in both fitness and skill were noticeable.

Man of the Match was difficult but was awarded to Ian Tucker for a combative and competent performance in a couple of positions he was asked to cover (and not because Coach Tim was grateful for his dad reffing).

Central 1 Stoke Hill Celtic 1

Stoke Hill Celtic are an excellent passing team and worthy of being top of the League, they needed one point from this match to clinch the league, so they were clearly up for the challenge. Last match we played them it was like chasing shadows, one minute they were there and the next the ball was in the back of the net, So we needed some divine inspiration! This came from the fact that for the first time this season we could put out pretty much the strongest team we had available and whilst Roderick (Ross?) might try and claim the kudos for the formation, as I am writing the match report it was clearly my idea! We knew we had to close them down and then hit long balls for Jarod and Jack to use their strength to muscle in, so we chose 3 central defenders and two wingbacks with Ben, Ed and Paddy in centre midfield to close down the ball and prevent them passing through us.

I think Stoke Hill were surprised at our resilience and the first goal came from the 'headless chicken' Ben Grayson who ran tirelessly the whole match and effectively bullied his way to the ball early in the first half to slam home a well deserved lead to Central. Credit to Stoke Hill who persevered with their passing game and put our defence under severe pressure at times with one shot being cleared off the line by a heroic Ross when Dan had parried the first shot. Dan made some further excellent saves and Ian, Sam and Jack Martin battled like Trojans to keep the 'swarm' at bay to keep the score at 1 - 0 at half time.

Second half Aaron came on for Ross, Stoke Hill had the bit between their teeth and with the slope of the pitch helping they attacked with pace and precision passing to be denied on a number of occasions by Dan who played a blinder in goal. Half way through the half Paddy was taken out in their penalty area (has the bruise to prove it) but the ref was too far away to award it and things started to get a bit niggly, Joe Harrison got booked for an unassuming comment and a number of fouls were committed,

However, we held out until ten minutes to go when a through ball released a Stoke Hill Striker who finished clinically to make it 1 - 1. Luke came on for Joe who was still pleading his innocence and we held out for a well deserved draw. Man of the Match: Dan Phillips for a near perfect display in Goal.

Central 4 Countess Wear 5

It feels like we just took the nets down from the midweek match against Stoke Hill Celtic and we are putting them back up again for another tough match!

Previous game with CWD was a complete disaster, I think we let the first goal in in 34 seconds and got absolutely annilated 8 - 1 so we had to look again to the heavens for some extra help. I think for the first ten minutes of this match he was obviously watching another match as, yet again, we could not deal with the long ball over the top and the pace of the Dynamoes' striker, as we lost 3 goals and also more importantly in a clash, Dan Phillips was stretchered off (didn't have a stretcher but you know what I mean) with a suspected broken big toe (now confirmed, out of action for 8 weeks). I thought hear we go again for another thrashing,  Jack Leech obviously was singing from a different hymn sheet as I was scratching and shaking my head down one end of the pitch Jack scored two goals in quick succession down the other - game on!

Aaron came on for Dan and Ed swapped a midfield role for defence with Ian Tucker moving into midfield and we suddenly looked in control of the game and all players tails were up and we piled on the pressure and it remained 3 -2 at half time.

Aaron was really up for it in goal and was out like a flash to stifle the long ball and Ian like a terrier was snapping at their heals, however against the run of play Dynamoes scored again to make it 4 - 2. Then Jarod took the occy and fired one in from long range 4 - 3, Jack missed a couple of golden opportunities to level the score and then Dynamoes scored again. Esben was asleep on his feet after a sleepover party so Sam came on with fresh legs and power and hit a long ball for Jarod to latch onto to finishing well to make it 5 - 4. Unfortunately the ref blew the whistle before we had a chance to score any more and win the game, so we narrowly lost but again this match shows how well the team has developed and the lads can be proud of themselves - I am!

Man of the match: Aaron Hunt was really up for it being composed and confident, well done

Colyton Reds 2 Central 3

And so it came to pass that this season finally came to an end with an away trip to Colyton Reds. There are two pitches in Colyton and all the drivers went to wrong one before being redirected to a scenic pitch by the River Coly – it was good thing the kick off had been delayed by half an hour. The day was sunny and warm but the pitch was hard and bumpy and led to several shanks and slices by both sides.

Coach Tim was absent but considering it was a bank holiday weekend Coach Paul had the luxury of three substitutes to bring on – and he was going to need all of them. Game started off brightly with Central enjoying quite a bit of possession but both defences were playing well and Aaron Hunt in Central goal was in particularly confident mood. Jarod Bradley was giving the Colyton defence a good harrying but Jack Leech was a bit hampered after picking up a knock (in the car park outside KGV!!!). Jack Leech eventually broke the deadlock with a fine finish after he and Jarod had bulldozed their way into the box. Patrick Clark came on forcing the first reshuffle and Central lost their way a bit and Colyton put some pressure on. The equaliser came after an Aaron clearance fell nicely for Colyton and the defence failed to react – a perfect lob over Aaron was the result. Fortunately just before half-time good work by Patrick Clark on the bye line set up Jarod Bradley who passed the ball into the far corner giving the goalie no chance. Central went in at half-time 1-2 up.

The second half would be a disjointed affair for Central as first Esben Ronan and then his central defending partner Sam Philpott (who picked up a nasty knee injury and was carried off) had to be substituted and Ian Tucker and Ed Hammond would fill several different positions during the game. Colyton did manage to equalise during this period and the game was heading towards a draw which would probably have pleased both coaches. This was not to be as Robert Kirk, with what turned out to be the last attack, pressurised the goalie and the ball fell invitingly for Jarod to snatch the winner.

An excellent way to complete the season and it was an all round team performance from all the 14 players which was the most pleasing aspect. Ed Hammond was awarded man of the match for playing well in three or four different positions.

Central 2 FC Lakers 6

Coach Tim had thought that he was going to have a well earned break for the Summer but not quite yet as we entertained a touring FC Lakers from Gloucester down at Bromhams Farm. Weather was fine but with a significant side wind - the grass was long and kept the ball in play. This was played over half-term so there were a few absentees so Ben Burak made a guest appearance as did Luke Abrahams. With Dan still injured and Aaron away, Jack Martin eagerly (not) picked up the goalie gloves.

The game started evenly as both teams felt each other out but FC Lakers began to have success down their right and eventually this led to the opening goal. This was cancelled out as a fine lobbed pass from Joe Van Doorslauer fed Ben Burak who, in turn, successfully lobbed the excellent Lakers goalie. The game was quite open with plenty of shots at goal by both sides. Lakers retook the lead as they found an unmarked man in the box. Just before half-time Ben Burak went on a mazy run beating four players and slotting past the goalie - 2-2 at half time

Whatever Lakers were fed at half-time worked well and they scored almost straight away - they had three or four strong, direct forwards and for the first time they were all on the pitch at the same time. Central continued to create chances but the normal passing movements were replaced by individual long range efforts which were either too near the goalie or off target - Laker's pace and strength in contrast added three more goals. Jack Martin had by this time handed the goalie gloves to an even more reluctant Joe Van Doorslauer. Final score 2-6. Now maybe Coach Tim can get his rest - apart from that tournament in Colyton next weekend of course.

Man of the Match was Ed Hammond for causing chaos on the right-wing.
